When Is a Root Canal Necessary?

A root canal becomes necessary when the soft tissue inside your tooth, the pulp, becomes infected or inflamed. This can happen due to deep decay, a crack or chip, repeated dental procedures on the same tooth, or trauma. Left untreated, the infection can spread to surrounding tissue and bone, causing serious complications.

Signs you may need a root canal include:

What to Expect During Treatment

The procedure is performed under local anesthesia. You'll feel pressure but no pain. Dr. Miller removes the infected pulp tissue from inside the tooth, cleans and shapes the root canals, and fills them with a biocompatible material to prevent reinfection. In most cases a crown is placed afterward to protect and strengthen the treated tooth. Most patients are surprised by how routine the experience feels and return to normal activity the same day.
